Initially, the yacht was built for Sheikh Abdul Mohsen al-Sheikh. The Sheikh was also the owner of Project Sassi, a 145-meter Lurssen yacht that was tragically destroyed in a fire in 2019. It is believed that Sassi will either be rebuilt or replaced by a new yacht.
In 1999, Coral Ocean made headlines when a Picasso painting titled “Buste de Femme,” valued at US$ 30 million, was stolen from the yacht. The painting, created by Pablo Picasso in 1938, was eventually recovered in 2019 at the home of a Dutch real estate developer who had no knowledge of the theft. The painting has since been returned to its rightful owner.
For over 20 years, the yacht retained the name Coral Island. In 2016, the yacht’s owner at the time reportedly sold her to Lurssen Shipyard’s CEO Peter Lurssen, who ordered an extensive refit at the Lurssen facility. Following the refit, she was renamed Coral Ocean and made available for charter through Burgess.
In 2019, Australian waste entrepreneur Ian Malouf acquired Coral Ocean, investing in a $35 million refit at STP shipyard in Mallorca. The refit included a new white hull, a refreshed interior, an updated sundeck, and an increased volume of 150gt.
